When my husband and I found out we were expecting twins, our priorities shifted almost overnight.

Weekend shopping trips became fewer and farther between, eating out turned into cooking at home, and those little impulse purchases at Target suddenly didn't feel quite so harmless.

While our budget changed, one thing didn't: we still wanted to spend quality time together.

The good news? Some of our favorite date nights have ended up being the ones that cost the least. Whether you're saving for a house, paying off debt, preparing for a baby, or simply trying to spend less, you don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy each other's company.

Whether you're staying in or heading out, these inexpensive date ideas prove that you don't need to spend a fortune to make great memories together.

Here are seven inexpensive date night ideas that are actually fun—and just might become some of your favorite traditions.

1. Have a DIY Paint Night at Home

Skip the expensive paint-and-sip class and create your own version at home! Grab a few inexpensive canvases, acrylic paints, and your favorite bottle of wine (or your favorite takeout if that's more your style).

One of my favorite trends on TikTok is seeing couples paint portraits of each other without looking at the canvas until they're finished. They're almost always hilariously bad—and that's what makes them so much fun.

2. Build a Backyard Bonfire

There's just something about sitting around a fire that slows life down a little.

Throw on a sweatshirt, roast marshmallows, make s'mores, and spend the evening catching up without a million distractions. If you have kids, this is also a great at-home date after they've gone to bed—no reservations, no babysitter, and no expensive bill at the end of the night. Honestly, some of the best date nights are the ones where you don't overthink them.

3. Try the Thrift Store Outfit Challenge

Set a budget—maybe $10 or $20 each—and head to your local thrift store. Your mission? Pick out the funniest outfit you can find for your partner. Then actually wear them. Trust me, the pictures alone will be worth every penny. I actually saw a group of couples do this at Goodwill once, and I was so jealous I wasn't friends with all of them.

4. Create a Movie Theater Night at Home

Movie nights at home honestly beat going to the theater in my opinion. My husband and I love stopping at Walgreens beforehand to grab our favorite movie candy, making a big bowl of popcorn, and curling up on the couch with a cozy blanket. The snacks are cheaper, the seats are more comfortable, and I can pause the movie whenever I need a bathroom break. (#SmallBladderProblems)

5. Go for a Walk Together

This one sounds simple, but it's honestly one of my favorites. I've found that my husband and I have our best conversations when we're simply walking together—no phones, no distractions, and usually not even the dogs. Whether we're talking about work, our kids, or pointing out funny things around our downtown square, those conversations are some of my favorite moments of the week.

You could also pack a picnic, explore a local park, or find a nearby nature trail!

6. Cook a Meal Together

Cooking dinner together has become one of my favorite inexpensive date nights. It gives us a chance to slow down, catch up on the day, and work toward something together—even if it's just tacos on a Tuesday.

I know some people hate sharing the kitchen, but I actually love it. There's something surprisingly intimate about standing side by side, trying a new recipe, and then sitting down to enjoy something you made together.

7. Have a Couples Game Night

Board games, card games, puzzles—you really can't go wrong. Classic games like Scrabble, Yahtzee, or Sorry are always fun, but there are also plenty of games made specifically for couples. Personally, my favorite is just simply working on a puzzle together. There's something satisfying about solving a challenge as a team, and it's a great reminder that you're often better together than apart.

Whether you're laughing over a ridiculously competitive game of Yahtzee or celebrating because you finally finished that impossible puzzle, it's a fun reminder that quality time doesn't have to cost much.

Final Thoughts on planning a Budget Date Night

Some of my favorite memories with my husband haven't happened during expensive vacations or fancy nights out. They've happened while taking walks around our neighborhood, making dinner together, or eating popcorn on the couch during a movie marathon.

At the end of the day, quality time isn't about how much money you spend—it's about intentionally choosing each other, even during seasons when life (or your budget) looks a little different.

If you have a favorite inexpensive date night idea, I'd love to hear it in the comments. I'm always looking for new ideas to add to our own list!
