I remember when I found out I was pregnant with twins, my mind instantly spiraled.

"Do you need two of everything for twins! We won't have any room!"

Given that we live in a small fixer-upper, I was worried about having enough room for two babies, let alone two of everything they could possibly need.

If you're expecting twins and feeling overwhelmed by all of the baby gear recommendations online, take a deep breath.

Do You Need Two of Everything for Twins? The Short Answer:

No. Twins do not need two of everything.

I spent countless hours scouring Parents of Multiples groups, reading registry guides, and researching all things twins while I was pregnant. Now that I've survived the newborn stage and beyond, I can confidently say that some items are absolutely worth doubling up on, while others are simply unnecessary.

Here's what I learned after bringing home twins to a small house.

Twin Items You Definitely Need Two Of

Cribs

You will eventually need two separate sleep spaces that follow current safe sleep guidelines. Even if your babies share a bassinet or nursery center during those early newborn weeks, you will need two cribs eventually.

Car Seats

This one is pretty self-explanatory.

You 1,000% need two car seats. There is just no getting around this one.

High Chairs or Booster Seats

Once your twins start solids, you'll need a seat for each baby. Whether you choose traditional high chairs or space-saving booster seats is up to you, but plan on having two.

Safe Places to Set Your Babies Down

I originally only bought one bouncer, thinking two was unnecessary. Looking back now, two bouncers were a necessity.

As a twin mom, there were countless times when I needed to safely set both babies down at the same time. While you don't necessarily need two identical bouncers, you do need two safe places to put your babies.

Twin Items You Only Need One Of

A Twin Feeding Pillow

Skip the idea of buying two Boppy pillows.

One Twin Z Pillow was more than enough for our family and quickly became one of our most-used baby products. We used it daily for feeding, lounging, and allowing the twins to interact side-by-side.

Play Gyms and Activity Mats

You definitely do not need two play gyms.

One large activity mat or play gym is plenty for twins, especially during those first several months.

Diaper Pails

One diaper pail was more than enough for us. Trust me—you'll still be emptying it constantly.

Changing Stations

In a small house, having multiple changing stations simply wasn't necessary.

We used a changing pad on top of a dresser and it worked perfectly.

Twin Items That Are Nice to Have Two Of (But Aren't Necessary)

Swings

Swings are tricky.

You don't need two swings, but I do think having access to two soothing spaces can be helpful, especially if both babies are fussy at the same time.

If you're tight on space, consider a compact option like the Graco Simple Sway or Graco Slim Spaces swing.

I would avoid purchasing two expensive swings before your babies arrive, though. Babies can be surprisingly opinionated, and there is no guarantee they'll even like them.

Baby Bathtubs

You certainly don't need two baby bathtubs.

However, looking back, I actually loved having two Angelcare Bath Supports. They take up very little room because they can be hung on the wall when not in use, and they allowed us to bathe both babies at the same time.

Was it absolutely necessary? No.

Did it save us time and make life easier? Absolutely.

Bassinets

You do not necessarily need two bassinets.

There are plenty of twin-specific sleep options available for those early months, including products like the Simmons Bassinet or the Baby Trend Retreat Twins Nursery Center.

Personally, I loved having both. We used the Simmons Bassinet in our bedroom and took the Nursery Center with us when visiting family or traveling.

My Biggest Advice for Expecting Twin Parents

If I could give expecting twin parents one piece of advice, it would be this:

Start with the essentials.

You can always buy more later.

One of the biggest mistakes I made while pregnant was assuming I needed every product marketed toward twin parents. The reality is that every family—and every set of twins—is different.

You may discover that your babies love swings. They may hate them. One baby may love being worn while the other prefers bouncing in a seat.

You simply won't know until they're here.

I also highly recommend checking Facebook Marketplace for larger twin items. Twin gear is expensive, and many products are only used for a few short months. We saved hundreds of dollars by purchasing some items secondhand.

Most importantly, don't let the thought of "two of everything" stress you out. Twins require creativity, flexibility, and a whole lot of love—not an endless amount of baby gear.
